Selective Web Blocking in the Workplace
For an employer, to block employees from all of the risky or time-wasting web sites and widgets is hard. Employees can always find clever ways to reach forbidden content. But that does not mean employers should give up. A program of selective blocking can be just as good as a program that perfectly blocks all undesirable content. Selective blocking informs employees that management does care how employees use resources. And selective blocking can remind employees that they have better things to do than hang out on suspect web sites.
With selective blocking, the employer blocks certain sites, such as Facebook. When employees try to access it, they see a statement from management that reminds them to be responsible and get back to work. Here is an example of a customized screen that Cyberpatrol could throw up when employees surf in the wrong direction.
